The Lost Symbol Sets Records in 2009
The Lost Symbol, Dan Brown’s follow-up novel to The DaVinci Code, continues to top bestseller lists. Starting with its release on September 16, 2009, Brown’s latest book has been setting records in sales of adult fiction.
Continuing the exploits of Brown’s popular protagonist Robert Langdon, the new publication was widely anticipated by Brown’s readers after delays pushed the release from 2005 to late 2009. It was worth the wait for loyal fans. One million copies sold in the first day across the US, Canada and the UK, making it the fastest selling adult fiction offering ever. Sales surpassed two million copies by the end of the first week.
A Boost for Book Sellers and New Technology
The influx of sales caused by the launch of The Lost Symbol revitalized the flagging sales that book sellers were facing in 2009. The book is still leading bestseller lists more than 3 months after its introduction, helping to supplement sales heading into the busy Christmas season.
Included in the initial one million copy sales figures were audiobooks and electronic or e-books. Some on-line retailers even found e-book purchases exceeded that of hardcover copies in the first 24 hours of sales. The Lost Symbol sold more than ten times the number of e-books as any other title. In fact the book gained position in top 15 lists at Amazon.com in its first week in all available formats, including e-book, hardcover, large print and audiobook.
International Appeal for The Lost Symbol
The Lost Symbol is to be published in more than 60 countries, including the December 2009 release of the Russian translation. The novel follows the international popularity of the book’s precedessors, Angels and Demons and The DaVinci Code.
